Part-payments without wahala: a seller's system for deposits and balances

Deposits, “I'll complete it on Friday,” and split transfers are how Nigeria buys. Here is how to run them without losing track.

In much of the world, an order is paid in full or it does not ship. In Nigerian commerce, a deposit is a handshake: “send 150k first, balance on delivery” is not an exception — it is the standard rhythm of trust between seller and buyer.

The rhythm is fine. The record-keeping around it usually is not.

Where part-payments go wrong

Every one of these ends the same way: an awkward conversation where nobody has proof, and someone — usually you — absorbs the difference.

  • The deposit is confirmed in chat but never written anywhere.
  • The balance amount is remembered differently by both sides.
  • The rider collects “the balance” without knowing the exact figure.
  • Two part-payments on different orders blur into one number.

The system: every payment gets three facts

A part-payment is only safe when it is recorded with three facts, at the moment it lands:

  • Who paid — the customer, by name, attached to their order.
  • Exactly how much — the transfer amount, not a rounded memory of it.
  • What remains — the new balance, computed immediately, not later.

Deliveries and the exact collect amount

The most expensive part-payment mistake happens at the door: the rider collects the wrong balance. Whatever system you use, the person doing delivery must carry the exact outstanding figure in writing — not the order total, not a guess. A proper delivery note with a “collect on delivery” line ends the problem permanently.

The payoff

Sellers assume part-payments are inherently risky. They are not — untracked part-payments are. Run the three-fact system for a month and deposits stop being a source of disputes and start being what they were meant to be: a way for customers to commit early and buy more.
